Tano Gets Contract For Vessel Control Systems

Tano Corporation of Metairie, La., has been awarded a contract to design and manufacture centralized control systems for two refrigerated containerships. The vessels are being built by Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Sparrows Point, Md., shipyard for Farrell Lines Incorporated.

The Tano system for each 813- foot vessel will consist of two separate engine room consoles which will control and monitor vital functions of two Foster Wheeler boilers and Westinghouse steam turbines. The machinery control system provides for one man engine room operation, with comprehensive monitoring at the central control station or by remote control from a bridge console which is also being supplied by Tano. The systems also provide a data/alarm/bell logger which prints over 60 propulsion and auxiliary functions in addition to logging all alarms and engine change commands.

Of the vessels' 1,712 twentyfoot- equivalent containers, 828 are refrigerated, and Tano is supplying refrigeration consoles to monitor and control the temperatures. Since 1963, Tano has been engaged in the design and manufacture of shipboard automation systems and steering controls for both military and commercial vessels. The company has provided such systems for vessels ranging from high-speed jet crewboats and Coast Guard cutters to giant oil tankers of more than 390,000 dwt. Specialized installations have included control systems for floating gas liquefication plants and a number of semisubmersible offshore drilling rigs.

Tano also designs automation systems for refineries, chemical plants, pipelines and utility distribution networks; manufactures sophisticated computer interface equipment and intelligent data terminals; and designs, installs and maintains energy management systems for office buildings, institutions and industrial plants.
